Purse Badge

Item #1494

Date:  1350 - 1400

Found in Holland. Pouches such as this one may have had a sexual conotation. The purse represents the female genetalia. Often these are represented with a dagger stuck through them. The dagger is usually represented as a very phallic "ballock" dagger. Purse bages may also have been work for the same purpose as coin badges--to bring luck in aquiring money. This example is extremely similar to #1874 in Van Beuningen's Heilig en Profaan, Volume 2.
