The frequency with which the name changes is clearly the result of illiteracy. None of these man could read or write their own names so the people who wrote the names had to sound out the name and try to get it right. Frequently two brothers or father and son would be listed on the same page and their names would be spelled differently. I have found twelve distinct variations in the 300-year period. The most common variations are Askins, Askens, Atkins and Askin.

1 Nina Leola Askins: Born 10 June 1901, Lakewood, Shelby, Illinois; Died 24 March 1992, Assumption, Christian, Illinois; Buried Pleasant View Cemetery, Assumption, Christian, Illinois; Married 9 September 1920; Charles Cornelius Williams Sr.: Born 18 February 1902, Ramsey, Illinois; Died 28 February 1972, Assumption, Christian, Illinois; Buried Pleasant View Cemetery, Assumption, Illinois. Nina attended school in Moequa, Illinois where she described her self as being an average student. Nina Loved to play baseball as a youth and she was quite good at it. When she was 19 she was attending a church social and met Charles Williams, a man her sister was dating. She married him later that year. Fortunately, this did not cause much friction between the sisters and they were able to remain close all their lives. Their closeness was not only emotional. The sisters lived next door to each other for the latter halves of both of their lives. Nina and Minnie were also close in another way. On January 15th, 1929 they both made the paper with the headline "Sisters gave birth to girls within hours of each other" Nina had Phyllis Jeanne and Minnie had Margy May. The article ran again in the local papers on Phyllis and Margy's fiftieth birthday. Unfortunately Phyllis did not live to see her fiftieth birthday. She would have enjoyed seeing the article. Nina was a cafe cook. When their daughter Phyllis was attending Illinois State University Nina took a job in a garment factory to help pay her daughters tuition. 2 Charles Edward "Ed" Askins: Born 25 July 1879, Shelby Co., Illinois; Died 5 October 1955, Assumption, Christian Co., Illinois; Buried Greenwood cemetery, Assumption, Christian, Illinois; Married 18 September 1898, at the bride's mother's home; Leah Estella Robinson: Born 15 January 1881, Shelby Co., Illinois; Died 6 January 1944, Assumption, Christian Co., Illinois. (See Robinson,) Ed's parents died when he was just five years old. Since he was so young when he was orphaned he was raised by Frank Askins, an older brother. Not much is known of his parents beyond their names. Ed was a cement finisher and a farmer. In Assumption, many of the older sidewalks are stamped with "Askins" these are the ones he poured. Ed was a successful private contractor and builder in Moequa, Illinois. Ed and Estella had four children: Forest Hilred Askins who died in infancy; Lura Neta Askins born 1 June 1900 who married Charles William Munson and had Delbert and at Estella; Nina Leola Askins born 10 June 1901, who married Charles Cornelius Williams; and Minnie Merle Askins born 25 October 1902, who married Clyde Munson and had James, Harold, Margy May and David. Sources: Census Records; Wanda Williams' notes; Wedding license; interviews with, Pam Martinsic, Delbert Munson and Ruth (Rukel) Munson.

4 Daniel H. Askins: Born about 18 January 1849, Shelby Co., Illinois; Died 18 May 1884; Buried Neal Cemetery, Dry Point Township, Shelby Co., Illinois; Married Acenith Mildread Cannon: Born about 1853, Virginia; Died about 28 November 1885, Dry Point Township, Shelby Co., Illinois. Daniel and Acenith had four children: James W. Askins born about 1868; Hady A. Askins born 11 October 1871; Henry Franklin "Frank" Askins born about 1875; and Charles Edward Askins born 25 July 1879, who married Estella Leah Robinson. Sources: Census Records; Wanda Williams' notes.

Acenith's Father--

10 John H. Cannon: Born about 1830, Virginia; Died after 1880, Dry Point Township?, Shelby Co., Illinois. According to a Family tradition, Acenith's mother, John's wife, was a full-blooded Kickapoo Indian. Nina Williams recalled that her name began with a "T." On the contrary LDS records indicate that Alcinda Deal Married a John Cannon in Rappahannock Co., VA (See below for significance of this county) on 29 January 1848, This would be perfect for a family who had children in the early 1850s. The name Alcinda is unusual and could be related to Acenith. A name like Deal does not rule out the possibility of her being an Indian, though it makes it less likely, if indeed Alcinda is our John's wife. It is entirely possible that John had another Daughter, named Tabitha Cannon, born about 1850 who married Daniel's cousin James Jesse Askins.

According to the 1880 Census of Shelby County John, his wife, and both his parents were born in Virginia. John is of the right age group to have fought in the Civil War. Since his daughter was born in Virginia in about 1853, it is entirely possible that he fought for the Confederacy (If indeed he served at all.) The 1840 Census of Virginia reveals an interesting fact--in Rappahannock Co. there is a Acenath Cannon listed as the head of a family. This could well be John's mother or grandmother. Rappahannock also holds a John as head of a family in virtually every census taken. Sources: 1880 Shelby county Census Records; Wanda Williams' notes; 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860 Census of Virginia.

Daniel's Parents--

8 Abram (Abraham) Askins: Born about 1806, Virginia; Died 3 May 1877, Dry Point Township, Shelby Co., Illinois; Buried Neal Cemetery, Dry Point Township Shelby Co., Illinois; Married 25 September 1831, Knox Co., Ohio; Susan (Susannah) Daugherty: Born about 1816, Delaware; Died 21 August 1878, Dry Point Township, Shelby Co., Illinois; Buried Neal Cemetery, Dry Point Township Shelby Co., Illinois. Abram and Susan had ten children: James J "Curtis" Askins born 11 January 1832; Lewis Askins born 25 December 1836; John L. Martin Askins born July 1840; Harrison Freeman Askins born 27 March 1840; Martha E. A. Askins who married Alan Wakefield born 1842; William Askins born 1845; Daniel H. Askins born about 18 January 1849 who married Acenith Mildread Cannon; Reason Askins, born 7 August 1851; Ann Askins born 1854; and Delfina Della Askins born 1856. Sources: Census records; Reuben's will.

16 Reuben H. Askins: Born about 1784 (66 in 1850 Census), of Monongalia, Virginia; Died about 1859 , Shelby Co., Illinois; Married Elizabeth Harris. Reuben and Elizabeth had nine children: Robert Askins; Nancy Askins who married Henry Kyle; Jesse Askins born about 1805 who married Delia Roberts and had Amos, Enis, Mary, Lucinda, Reuben, William, and John; Abram Askins born 1806 in Virginia, who married Susannah Daugherty; John T. Askins born after 1807; George Askins; Rebecca Askins born 1815 who married Samuel Sorden; William Askins born 1830 in Ohio; and Jonathon Askins born before 1839. In Illinois, and presumably in Virginia, Reuben was a farmer. The ancestors listed after this point are attached by conjecture. Since Edward and Reuben are listed in such similar ways I strongly suspect that they are father and son. The following records pertain to the life of Reuben Askins:

Reuben and his son Abram Askins left Monongalia Co., Virginia, and relocated in Knox Co. Ohio by 1830. I cannot find any of them in the 1820 census so they may have been traveling when it was taken. While in Monongalia Co., Abram was probably born, Reuben was probably married and possibly born. Sources: Census records; Reuben's will; Monongalia County Land Book;

32 Edward Askins: Born about 1760, of Monongalia, Virginia, now West Virginia; Died after 1820, Perry County, Indiana; Married 1800, Orange Co., Virginia; Frances Wisdom: Born about 1779. Edward appears to have had two children--Reuben and John. However, Reuben was born too early to have been Frances' son. I have no concrete evidence to tie Edward to Philemon. However, Philemon is clearly the brother of John (See appendix) John appears never to have married. Edward is found in 1816 selling land willed to him by John Askins. This all seems to make sense but is it by no means carved in stone. The following records pertain to the life of Edward Askins:

1776 An Edward Atkins from Virginia fought in the Revolutionary war though it does not appear to be our ancestor as he is listed as living in Kentucky rather than Indiana at the time of his pension.

1/28/1780 Edward Atkins married Frances Wisdom in Orange county, Virginia. (later becoming Augusta Co., and later still Monongalia County) I have not determined if it is this Edward Askins/Atkins. At this time, Atkins is one of the most common variations on the spelling of Edward's name.

Executors, Robert Porterfield, Henry Mowrey. Teste: Jas Hill, Daniel McFarland, Christian Gibson. Proved 16th June, 1795, by James Hill, Daniel Mc Farlin. Executors refuse to execute widow also. Administration granted Alaxander Gibson, son to decedent. [Alexander's 1782 will does not mention Edward, so he is probably descended from one of the older daughters not listed in the 1782 will either, rather than the four unmarried ones.]

1/27/1816 Whereas I, Edward Askins of the County of Perry in the Indiana Territory [Note; became a state this same year]- have sold to John Buchanan [see

5/4/1801] of Augusta County, State of Virginia, a tract of land containing by survey 127 acres, he is to have it- which land is situated in Augusta County, Virginia on the Waters of Christians' Creek and was devised to me by will of John Askins, Dec'd. I authorize William Wilson Senior of said County to be my attorney in fact to convey said land- [then follows an affidavit by the Clerk of the County Court of Breckenridge County, Kentucky that the above Edward Askins acknowledged the Power of Attorney to be his act, Etc. Recorded Augusta County, Virginia March 25, 1816. It is interesting that John Buchanan, the executor of John Askins' will was the one who purchased the land from Edward Askins. Edward wound up in Perry County Indiana. He went there with his son John, and his son's wife and children. Edward is still alive and listed in the 1820 Census, but disappears off of the 1830 Census. Edward and Reuben are listed next to each other in virtually every case in the Monongalia County land records. Sources: Census records; Monongalia County Land Book;

64 Philemon Askins: Born about 1734, Prince William Co.?, Virginia; Married Miss Gibson (See Gibson) . A Philemon later seems to have married Philenor Stayton: Born about 1726, Maryland; Died 1826, St. Clair Co., Illinois. This may or may not be the philemon in question. Philemon (sometimes Philip) Askins only had one son but he many have had several daughters. Philemon is the only Askins of his generation listed in Monongalia Co. The following records relate to the life of Philemon Askins:

January 1756 Philemon Askings was listed on the Pay Roll of Captain Thomas Waggener's Company.

6/1/1756 Philemon Atkins was listed on the Pay Roll of Captain Thomas Waggener's Company.

7/7/1756 Philemon Askins was listed on the Pay Roll of Captain Thomas Waggener's Company.

7/9/1756 John Arskins was listed on the Pay Roll of Captain Thomas Waggener's Company for Service at Monongalia. This list is much smaller than the regular Pay Roll list. This probably indicates some sort of special service pay. It contains only 25 names rather than the more typical Pay Roll lists of about 75 names. John's brother Philemon is not on the list.

September 1756 The monthly return of Captain Mercer's Company indicates that on 7 August John Askins, Phil: Askins, Thomas Donnahough, and John White were joined. All four of the men have previously been listed on the Pay Rolls for Captain Waggener's Company. None of them appear on the Size roll of September 1756 or Pay Roll of Jul/August 1756 for Captain Waggener's Company. Thus, confirming the notion of a transfer to a different command.

8/2/1756 a Size Roll of Captain Mercers Company was taken: Philemon Askins enlisted, in September of 1755 in Prince William County, 22 years of age, 5'8", Brown Complexion, Well Set Dark Hair, He was a Planter by trade from Virginia.

September 1756 Philemon Atkins was listed on the Pay Roll of Captain George Mercer's Company.

11/12/1756 Philemon Askins was listed on the Pay Roll of Captain George Mercer's Company.

1770 Philemon Askins, 400 Acres, Ices Run, Index to Record of Commissioners for Adjusting Claims of Unpatented Lands.

1774 (Lord Dunmore's War) Philemon Askins was listed among the soldiers on Captain Zachquil Morgan's roll of soldiers (militiamen) who received pay at Pittsburgh. All of the names of the men in this unit are common to Monongalia county they include Zachquil and Morgan Morgan; James Chew; John, William and Andrew Ice and many other common surnames.

1779 John Askins, warrant for 50 acres issued to Francis Long, Assignee of John Askins, A Soldier in the

1st Virginia regiment, under Colonel William Bird (in the French and Indian War) Proved on the oath of Alexander McClanachan. 1779, Augusta County (Monongalia County?) The fact that he was granted 50 acres indicates that he was a private. It would also stand to reason that Philemon was also a private. Philemon was not granted lands because he enlisted one year later than his brother and was not entitled to receive them.

10/7/1783 Philemon Askins 100 Acres Adj land, Land Entry Book

128 Edward Askins: Born 1660, Ulster, Ireland; Married Barbara Edwards: Born about 1660, Ulster, Ireland. There may be more than one generation inbetween he and Philemon. They came to America from Ulster, Ireland in 1720, the voyage took the family forty days. They settled for a time in Londonderry N.H. (N.C.?) and then moved to Virginia. Based on the name and their home in Ireland The Family was most certainly of Scotts Irish descent. Edward and Barbara had at least nine children: Nathaniel Askins, Born about 1700, married in 1726 Margaret Cochran (sister of Jean) and had John, James Jr. Elizabeth, Peter and two other daughters; James Askins, born about 1700 married in 1725, Jean Cochran and had Edward, John, James, Thomas, and William; Polly Askins; Margaret Askins; Philemon Askins; Anne Askins; one more son and two more daughters. The first four children were born in Ulster Ireland. Sources: LDS records; The Askins Clan

John Askins, brother of Philemon

1742 John Askins served in Captain Robinson's Company of the Augusta County Militia, along with a Daniel Mannaughhan. This name becomes significant when we come to land purchases and sales. (See 11/16/1753 & 9/27/1769.) John would have been very young when he enlisted. Unless his age was reported wrong on the

Size Roll of 1756 he would have been about 12-14 years old at this time.

11/16/1752 William Armstrong to John Askins, 85 acres. Corner Daniel Monantion; Smith's Creek.

January 1756 John Askings was listed on the Pay Roll of Captain Thomas Waggener's Company.

6/1/1756 John Atkins was listed on the Pay Roll of Captain Thomas Waggener's Company.

7/7/1756 John Askins was listed on the Pay Roll of Captain Thomas Waggener's Company.

This probably indicate some sort of special service pay. It contains only 25 names rather than the more typical Pay Roll lists of about 75 names. John's Brother Philemon is not on the list.

8/2/1756 a Size Roll of Captain Mercers Company was taken: John Askins enlisted in October of 1754 in Prince William County, 26 years of age, 5'10", Brown Complexion, Sturdy, Well Set Dark Hair, He was a Planter by trade from Virginia.

September 1756 The monthly return of Captain Mercer's Company indicates that on 7 August John Askins, Phil: Askins, Thomas Donnahough, and John White were joined. All four of the men have previously been listed on the Pay Rolls for Captain Waggener's Company. None of them appear on the Size roll of

September 1756 or Pay Roll of Jul/August 1756 for Captain Waggener's Company. Thus confirming the notion of a transfer to a different command.

September 1756 John Atkins was listed on the Pay Roll of Captain George Mercer's Company.

11/12/1756 John Askins was listed on the Pay Roll of Captain George Mercer's Company.

8/20/1757 there is a John Askins on the Size Roll of Colonel George Washington. This John Askins enrolled at a about the right time, (1754) in the right place (Prince William County) but he is too short, too light in color and too young to be the John Askins we are concerned with. There is a possibility that since John was almost certainly illiterate, there were errors in recording this information but it is doubtful.

11/22/1764 John Askin, added tithables.

9/27/1769. John Askins, of Fairfax County, [adjacent to Price William County] [sold] to John McIlhany, of Loudoun County, Gent £65. Two tracts--A, containing Corner Daniel Manahon, Smith's Creek; B, containing 75 acres patented to John, 10th Sep,

1774 (Lord Dunmore's War) John Askins was listed among the soldiers on Captain Zachquil Morgan's roll of soldiers (militiamen) who received pay at Pittsburgh. All of the names of the men in this unit are common to Monongalia county they include Zachquil and Morgan Morgan; James Chew; John, William and Andrew Ice and many other common surnames.

The fact that he was granted 50 acres indicates that he was a private. [Alexander McCachnan Jr. is listed in a court case of March 1765 as a soldier, "in actual service," and later as a deputy.]

10/19/1779 John Askins proved his services as a soldier in America in the war between Great Britain and France in the First Virginia Regiment, commanded by Colonel William Byrd--Granted certificate for 50 acres agreeable to the King's Proclamation, 1763.

Monongalia Co., Virginia

(now Monongalia and Preston Co., West Virginia):

The Askins Family is somewhat of a mystery. In Monongalia Co. Virginia there are four known Askins' Philemon, Edward, Reuben and Elizabeth. No doubt there were more however no records of their lives have yet been uncovered by this author. Monongalia County Virginia was formed from Augusta County in 1777. Preston County was also incorporated into Monongalia. West Virginia was formed from Virginia in 1863.

Elizabeth Askins: Born about 1760, Monongalia Co., Virginia; Married 1785, Monongalia Co., Virginia; John Kelly: They had in Monongalia Co., Virginia: William Kelly Born about 1784; Abigial Kelly Born about 1788; John Kelly Born about 1792; James Kelly Born about 1794; Alfred Kelly Born about 1795; Sarah Kelly Born about 1798; and Joseph Kelly Born about 1799. Source: LDS records.

Perry Co., Indiana:

When they left Monongalia it is clear that Edward and his son John (of whom there are no records in Monongalia, though he is of age in 1815) migrated westward to Perry County, Indiana. Here there are records of several of Askins':

Jacob Auskins Married 14 May 1815; Lydia Stark.

John Askins Married, 6 July 1815; Rebekah Fisher.

Rebeckah Askins Married 5 May 1816; Isaac Tindall.

Philena Askins got a licence to be Married 14 September 1821, to James Carlton.

Thomas Askings Born 8 February 1878, son of Marion Askins and Mary Starling.

Edward Askins: Listed as head of family in 1820 Census Perry Co.

Martha A. (B.) Askins: Married James Hall Moreland: They had in Perry County, Indiana: Joseph W. Moreland Born 21 October 1866; and Edward James Morland Born 30 December 1867. The family later moved to Olney, Richland County, Illinois and had Mollie Elizabeth Askins Born 27 October 1872.

Marion Askins Married Mary Starling. They had: Thomas Askings Born 8 February 1878.

Knox County, Ohio:

Another branch apparently migrated to Knox County, Ohio. Other marriages and births took place while the family lived here:

George Askins: Listed as head of family in 1820 Census, Bloomfield Twp.

Jonathan Askins: Listed as head of family in 1820 Census, Bloomfield Twp.

Nancy Askins Married 6 Jun 1822; Henry Kyle

Jesse Askins Married 1 Jun 1823; Delia Roberts. Jesse seems to have stayed in Knox county. He is listed in the 1850 Census. A Delila Askins is also listed as a head of household in the 1850 Census. It is possible the Jesse listed is actually the son of Jesse and that Delia is a widow.

William Askins Married 13 April 1826; Anna McClain.

Rebecca Askins Married 5 May 1830; Jacob Hess. If this Rebecca is Reuben's daughter then would have been but 15 when she married Jacob.

Abraham Askins Married 25 September 1831; Susanah Daugherty

Mary Askins Married 2 June 1835; Green Willis Hall.
