The Donaldson Families of Fayette County, Illinois

This page is a collection of records relating to the Donaldson Families of Fayette County, IL I have included variations on Donaldson including Dolison, Donleson and Dodson. The obit I mentioned was for Sarah Elizabeth Pope Donaldson. I don't have a copy but a descendant of hers does--Mary Farrimond. This is her e-mail crnberry@capecod.net. She had some elder relatives and cousins who supplied her with some family oral history as well as some docements.

One of her relatives "believe" that James Donaldson's parents were John and Mary Donaldson who were listed in an old church record from Fayette County in 1838. If that panned out and since we know that Delilah's father was John and mother ______Stone, logic would lead you to believe they were siblings. I've been burned before when making assumptions so more proof would be needed but it is a possibilty especially in light of James signing her marriage affidavit. That implies some type of close relationship.

She also mentioned that the John Donaldson listed above was found in the 1840 Fayette census as John Dallison. I have also seen Donaldson listed as Dollerson. Helps to check out all the strange spellings :-)

My connection is through Valentine Pope. My husband is his gggggrandson. Much of his family connections have been well researched (Sanders, Hallford are other prominent names in his line) except for the Pope line. I hate having missing links so I took it upon myself to start digging into that branch. What was once only about 4 pages of Popes has now turned into 60 pages!

Hey Doug,

What I have on the Delilah Donaldson/Pope connection is as follows:

William Pope married Delilah on December 17, 1868 in Fayette County. Delilah's parents are listed as John Donaldson and ___________Stone in the marriage book. William's parents are listed as John Pope and Rachel_____________. It is the 2nd marriage for both of them. William's first wife was Matilda Rhodes. Delilah's first husband was John A. Williams.

Doug,

Boy that MacDonald theory is an interesting one! Unfortunately, I think the published version of the 1860 Williamson Co census may be in error. I am attaching a copy of what I believe is the original census. Check it out and let me know what your think.

I do not have any explanation as to why they moved. Might be they were starting churches, but I cannot imagine whole family groups going here and there to do that!

John M. DONNEL, Jr. was born 1831 so it is somewhat unlikely that John also had a daughter at that time. We have no record of it.

I really appreciate your input on this. I am definitely going to retrace the MacDonald question. We cannot find John's parents or a marriage record for Elizabeth JERNIGAN and John M. DONNEL. Maybe it is recorded as John MACDONALD and Elizabeth JERNIGAN. Next time you go to the library can you check for that?

I am fairly certain that Elizabeth JERNIGAN was the daughter of Jesse and Tamar (Thamar) JERNIGAN. I'd also love to know if the ancestors of Jesse and Tamar are listed.

Thanks,

John Vermeer

Subject: Re: Donnel

Here is a little more; I checked today and found that in the published version of the 1860 Vensus of Williamson CO. Your John M. Donnel is listed as John MacDonald. He is living with his wife Delilah and James Williams, (One of Delilah's children from her first marriage.) Immediately next door is My John A. Williams and his wife Delilah Donaldson Williams. Living with them is Samuel Donelson whom I take to be a sibling of Delilah's. They all seem to have moved south from Fayette Co. (Quite a long way) and all seem to have moved back before the 1870 Census was taken. In fact in The Civil War John Williams fought with a Fayette County unit so I presume they were already back while the war was still going.

What I want to know is why go to Williamson County? Then why go back?

Another strange connection is the fact that Delilah is living alone in 1850 in Montgomery County. This is one of the places where your John M. Donnel lived.

Here are two hypotheticals for you.

Is it possible that John's name which according to family lore changed after a fight was changed not from "Donnell" to "Donnel" (a change so subtle that it is virutally irrelevant in an age of rampant illiteracy, certainly as a minster he could read but most others couldn't) but rather from "Donelson" (The spelling for Samuel above) to "Donnel" (This is a significant change but not radical change.)

If so then is it possible that John had a daughter named Delilah in or about 1831. (Delilah's second marriage record lists her father's name as John.) If this is the cas then Delilah's father married her husband', John Anderson

Williams', mother. This is quite a leap But I am interested in seeing if there is any possibility. (Though I doubt it)

By the way there is a big book on the Jeringen Surname in the library I used today. It stuck in my mond when I saw it but coudn't remember why it was relevant. Want me to look anything up in it for you?

I believe that your Delilah Williams is also mine. Delilah was bron in about 1798 in North Carolina. She was Married to John Williams who had died before 1868. John Williams: Born about 1795, Tennessee; Died before 1868; Married Delilah W. (Williams): Born about 1798, North Carolina. They came to Illinois from Tennessee in about 1829. John and Delilah had:

1. Charles Williams Born about 1821;

2. Elizabeth Williams Born about 1822;

3. Henry Williams Born about 1825;

4. Nancy Williams Born about 1828, who married Joel B. Stone;

5. Sarah Jane Williams Born about 1827, who married 25 November, 1844 Joseph Rench;

6. John Anderson Williams Born about 1829-32;

7. Ezekial Williams Born 27 December 1831, Died 4 May 1878, who married 1 May 1850 Elizabeth Daniels;

8. Cornelius Williams Born about 1836;

9. James Williams Born about 1840; and

10. Mary Susan Williams Born about 1842, who married 6 September, 1868; Aaron Cook.

Delilah later married 23 June 1847, Fayette Co., IL; John M. Donnell.

Their children John Anderson Williams and Delilah Donaldson lived in fayette county in all but the 1860 census whenn, like your John M. Donnel they lived in Williamson County. Is there any chance that after the argument you mentioned the name was changed from Donaldson to Donnel? If so then they may also be related to Delilah Donldson whose husband was the above mentioned John Anderson Williams.

John Anderson Williams: Born about 1828-32, Illinois; Died about 1865-1868; Married 2 November 1851; Delila Donaldson (Williams): Born about 1831, Illinois. She had in Illinois:

1. Sarah Williams: Born about 1852;

2. Cornelius Williams: Born about 1856, Fayette Co., IL (lived in

Fayette and Montgomery Counties), who married 18 March 1880, Fayette Co., IL Mahala Garland Born about 1859, Montgomery Co., IL, (daughter of Benjamin Garland and Elizabeth Kessinger) and later married 23 April 1880, Fayette Co., IL Throney Cole Born about 1869, Fayette Co., IL (daughter of R. T. Cole and Nancy Cune);

3. John W. Williams: Born about 1862; and

4. Charles Williams: Born about 1865.

Delila is listed in 1870 as married to William Pope: Born about 1842, Illinois. William and Delia were married on 17 December 1868. William was the father of:

1. Wilmeth Pope,

2. Anderson Pope,

3. Sally Pope,

4. Alice Pope,

5. Mary Pope, and

6. Hariet Pope.

This family was living in Williamson county at the time of the 1860 census. In the Civil War, John served in the 150th Illinois Infantry, raised in Fayette County. Hi Doug,

Received your e-mail today. I was looking over my records on the Donaldson and found a Senith D. Donaldson daughter of Barnet Donaldson and Mary Andrews Donaldson who married a Augustus Williams. It also said she married 3 times. It said also that Augustus Williams died in the Civil War.

Senith D. Donaldson was born 2-14-1828 in TN. Could this be Delilah just not using her first name? It could be that my records stating that she married a Augustus should be Anderson. Could your John Williams died of an injury from the war?

If James M. Donaldson is my ggreatgrandfather signed an affidavit at her second marriage it was because William was his brother-in-law. James's wife, Sarah Elizabeth Pope, had a brother, William born about 1845 and a brother John Pope about 1842. The birth dates you notice are about dates. I have nothing else on these people. I do have someone I think I maybe able to get information from. She researches the Pope family line.

My Sarah Elizabeth Pope Donaldson may or may not be from this Pope line. We do know that Simeon Pope had 3 daughters that were not named in the 1835 Census. By the 1850 Census Sarah was married to James M. Donaldson. The gal that I have been working with on the Pope line feels that Sarah was of this line. With what you have given me about the affidavit this would make since.

I suspect that Delilah was a sister to James. As far as I can tell James had settled in Shelby County,IL. He was married in Shelby County,IL to Sarah. I have not been able to search the Shelby County records as of yet.

I know nothing about his family. I have not found a record of birth. His son said he was born in TN. I will keep on looking. Maybe some day I'll find it.

Are you researching the Dodson family too? I'm related to that family also. I have some info on them but not much. I still have alot of work to do and I don't get back to Illinois but once a year now.

Well better close for now. Let me know if any of this helps.

Mary

Good Morning Doug,

I think we are most certainly related; however, I'm still trying to find the exact links. I know there is information online about James M. Donaldson, he married Mary Greathouse and that information is in several online genealogies. Therefore, I know that your history has been written and is a part of "The Donaldson Family and its Connections" by Alexander Donaldson. The book is very interesting to any researcher of the Donaldson family, and begins the basic genealogy from the early 1700s with Jacob Donaldson.

Regarding my specific family, I have traced my family to Perry County, Ohio and am now in the process of researching the exact link into the Donaldson family as it was last captured by Alexander Donaldson. I think I am close.

You can get a copy of the the book "The Donaldson Family and its Connections" from an old book dealer. My brother runs Book Connections, an online service, out of Long Beach, California and he might help you find it. I think he paid $50 for mine. You can also find it at the library of Congress and other established libraries. If you really want the documentation though, it is nice to have the book. You'll find out many things!

Anyway, lets keep in touch. I have a lady that is working with me in Cole County, although I haven't heard from her recently. I've dropped my genealogy work for about four months because I will be moving soon back to Oklahoma.

You may also be related to the Donaldson of Cherryville, Virginia. They established that area and there is a pretty good record of their genealogy in the library there. One of the things that you should know that make it difficult to make that 1800-1825 connection is that in the previous generations there were many families that had many children and they all named the children after eachother. So you might have had four generations of James Donaldson, and these may not have been exclusive. By the time that my grandfather was born, there was a James Donaldson, a James M. Donaldson, an Ebenezer Donaldson, and several others in Perry County, Ohio.

My next question is...do you believe that any of your ancestors came from Perry Co?

Another hint. I think your relatives may be included in the many articles written in a genealogical magazine called "Fayette Facts." Do you know this magazine exists?

Keep in touch.

Donald

Hi Doug,

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Gene A. Donaldson. I live at 208 N. Adams St. in Westmont, IL. 60559. My phone number is 1-630-969-2562. I was born 8/10/1928. I saw your notes in the Fayette County Queries regarding Delilah Donaldson. My Grandparents lived in Fillmore, IL.

Their names were William Alexander Donaldson and Emily Jane Craig. I have lots of Donaldson Genealogy as far back as Robert Donaldson born about 1730 who lived in North Carolina.

As for Delilah Donaldson's family she had three brothers Tom, Sam, and James. Her parents were John A. Donaldson and (only have first name of Mother) Sally.

John A. Donaldson's parents were John Temple Donaldson and Patsy _________. They had 13 Children.

John Temple Donaldson's parents were Moses Martin Donaldson and Lydia _______. They had 9 Children.

Moses Martin Donaldson's parents were Barnet Bailey Donaldson and Polly Andrews. They had 11 Children.

Barnet Bailey Donaldson's parents were Robert Donaldson and Elizabeth Walker. They had 5 Children.

Robert Donaldson's parents were Robert Donaldson and Hannah _______. They had 10 Children.

If you would like family sheets I could mail them to you but will need your address.

As for where I fit in my Father was Ray Conrad Donaldson. My Grandfather was William Alexander Donaldson. His Father was Elijah Hicks Donaldson. His Father was William Carroll Donaldson. His Father was Barnet Bailey Donaldson. Then came the two Robert Donaldsons.

Doug maybe you can answer a question for me. Many of my ancestors are buried in Fillmore but some information I have says they were buried in Donaldson Cemetery in Fayette County. Is there some way I can find out just where they are buried?

I hope I have helped you out and will give you more info if you would like.

As ever,

Gene Donaldson

Doug, here is what I have: Thomas Donaldson was born 1772 in North Carolina and died 12/28/1837 in Fayette County, Illinois (buried in Donaldson Cemetery). He married Susannah ? in North Carolina. Susannnah ? was born about 1782 in North Carolina and died 4/13/1855 in Fayette County, Illinois (also buried in Donaldson Cemetery). The 1850 Census has Susannah in Montgomery County, Illinois. I have three children of Susannah and Thomas; John T. Donaldson, Samuel Donaldson, and Thomas W. Donaldson (born 3/10/1816 in Tennessee and died 6/4/1889). I have John T. Donaldson as the eldest son and Thomas as the youngest. I have little information on John T. Donaldson other than he was married to an Elizabeth ?.

Unfortunately, I do not have a John Andrews Donaldson in my Donaldson information. Furthermore, I do not have a "Delilah" in my information. Do you have her married name? I know that certain "cousins" may have been inadvertently omitted from my family list; your line may be one of the omissions.

I am very interested in what you may have as far as wills, etc.. for the earlier generations. Would you be so kind to let me know what you have for whom?

I hope that the aforementioned was helpful; however, I have probably created more questions than answers.

Best regards, John

>Hi again:

>We've exchanged info before. I was hoping you could clarify something for me. I am looking for info that supports Thomas and Susannah Donaldson of Montgomery Co, IL Having a son John Andrews Donaldson. Do you have any info on thier children. Below you referenced a middle son Samuel and an elder son Thomas. This implies a younger son. Could it be John? Were there any other siblings? Do you have any other info on this line. I have a fair ammount of info for the generations before Thomas (Robert and Martha and their parents including wills and the like) What i am lacking is a solid connection between John A. and Thomas and Susannah. All I have is circumstantial..

What I know for sure is that my Delilah''s parents were John (probably Andrews) Donaldson and Miss (probably Sally) Stone I need some help. Below are some clippings to jog your memory.

Yes, we have a connection. My information has Susannah Donaldson, the widow of Thomas Donaldson, living with her youngest son Thomas, Jr. in Montgomery County according to the 1850 Census. Her middle son, Samuel, is listed as dying in Montgomery County before 1847. Thomas, Sr. was the oldest brother to Barnet, my line. The Barnet line appears to be Fayette County. It looks like you and I tie to Robert Donaldson and Martha Walker?

The original Question I posed to you.

Here is another question. Have any of your Donaldsons lived in Montgomery county. My Delilah Donaldson lived there at the time of the 1850 Census. At that time she lived in the home of Harmon McCaslin (A surname which appears in your info)

So, you may want to get in touch with her. I did have a little luck in my own research. (Very little) Knowing that Fayette County, IL didn't really exist previous to 1821, I started looking in the counties it was before then, and found there is a book called the "History of Bond and Montgomery Counties, Illinois" I found the index listing, and it shows the following Baldwins: Charles, John, J.P., Samuel, S.F., and William T. all are supposedly listed on pg 87. It also shows the following Dodsons:

Rev. Elijah Dodson on pg 114, and Willis Dodson on pg 137.

Fayette County was partially in Bond County 1817 thru 1821.

So, I just need to get ahold of this book, or someone who has it!

Keep in touch!

Sarah was the daughter of Willis DODSON, an early settler of Ramsey Township. I am seeking information about the ancestry of this family.

Doug, the problem with the Donaldsons is that there are so many of them and they often married into the same family.

The John Donaldson that I have some information on is John T. Donaldson, born 9/17/1809 in either NC or TN and died 9/5/1873 in Fayette County, IL. His parents were Barnet Donaldson and Mary Andrews (which is my Donaldson line). He was the sheriff of Fayette County in the 1860's and owned several stores around Ramsey, IL. He married Martha Mayberry before 1834. Their children were Mary I. Donaldson (born 1834), Nancy B. Donaldson (born 1835, married James Leach), Elizabeth Donaldson (born 1836), Martha E. Donaldson (born 1837, died 1858), Melinda Louisa Donaldson (born 1839, married William Lankford, died 1905), Suzanne Donaldson (born 1840, married Jacob A. Cook, died 1930), Charity A. Donaldson (born 1843, married JOHN POPE, died 1930 and is buried in POPE CEMETERY in Fayette County), William Donaldson (born 1847, died 1855), John T. Donaldson, Jr. (born 1848, died 1918), Louisa Donaldson (born 1853, married a McCaslin), Sarah Donaldson (born 1855), and Barnett Presley Donaldson (born 1858). As such, this does not appear to be the same John Donaldson even though there is a Pope in-law.

However, I have also come across another John Donaldson on whom I have no information. Barnet's oldest brother was Thomas Donaldson (born 1772 in NC and died after 1830 in IL). He married a Suzannah ???? in NC. They had three sons; John T., Samuel, and Thomas who was born 3/10/1816. The only information that I have on this John Donaldson is that he died in IL and married Elizabeth ???? Perhaps, this is the elusive John Donaldson that you are searching for. I hope that this helps rather than confuses your search.

When you get a chance, please let me know of your Donaldson line. As I have recently started down the Donaldson line, there is much information that you might be able to assist me with.

Take care.
