Kings of France

1. Isabel (Elizabeth) De Vermandois, Countess of Meulan: Born about 1081, of Valois, Brittany, France; Died 13 February 1131, England; Died 5 June 1118, Leicestershire, England; Married France; Robert Lord De Beaumont, 1st Earl of Leicester, Count of Meulan: Born about 1046 Pont-Audemer, Beaumont, Normandy, France. (See Beaumont)

2. Hugh "the Great" Crepi, Count of Vermandois: Born about 1050, of Vermandois, Normandy, France; Died 18 October 1102, Tarsus, Cilicie; Married about 1064, of France; Adelaide, Countess De Vermandois: Born about 1050, of Valois, Brittany, France; Died 23 September 1120/1124, Vermandois, Normandy, France. (See Counts of Vermandois)

3. Henry I, King of France: Born 1006, of Reims, France; Died 4 August 1060, Vitry, Brie, France; Married 29 January 1050, France; Anna Agnesa Yaroslavna, Princess of Kiev, Queen of France: Born 1036, of Kiev, Ukraine; Died 1076/1089, France (See Grand Princes of Kiev) Henry I, King of France from 1031 until 1060, succeeded his father, Robert II, to the throne. In order to quell a revolt by his brother Robert, he invested him with the duchy of Burgundy (1032). Henry later fought constantly with the powerful William of Normandy (the future William I of England.) Henry's wife was the daughter of Yaroslav the Wise Grand Duke of Kiev. This unusual marriage was arranged because it was very important that Henry should marry a princess of royal blood and lineage and Henry was too closely related to all of the other princesses who were unmarried and available in Europe. At this time the Church was very strongly enforcing its rules of not marrying within too close degrees of consanguinity and Henry was forced to look beyond the normal range of available princess for his wife.

4. Robert II "the Pious", King of France: Born 27 March 972, Orleans, France; Died 20 Jul 1031, Melun, France; Married 1000, France; Constance De Toulouse, Queen of France: Born about 974, of Toulouse, France; Died 25 July 1032, Melun, France. (See Counts of Toulouse) Soon after Hugh Capet lost control of Anjou and Blois (See below) his son Robert II was associated with him as King designate. Thereafter the French throne became hereditary in the Capetian family, and the descendants of Robert II's younger son were dukes of Burgundy from 1032 to 1361. The male line of the Capetian kings died with Charles IV in 1328, and the throne passed to a closely related younger branch, the Valois, who were followed in 1589 by the Bourbons. In all, the family produced 38 French kings by 1848.

5. Hugh "Capet", King of France, Count of Paris: Born about January 941, of Paris, Seine, France; Died 24 October 996, Paris, Seine, France; Married 968; Adelaide Princess of Aquitaine: Born about 952, of Germany; Died 1004. (See Dukes of Aquitaine) Hugh Capet, from whom the Capetian dynasty was to take its name, lost control of Anjou and Blois--key sections of the family domain--to subordinate Counts, but in 987 he was elected King of France in preference to the Carolingian claimant, Charles, Duke of Lorraine.

6. Hugh Magnus, Duke of France, Count of Paris: Born about 900, of Paris, Seine, France; Died 16 June 956, Dourdan, France; Married before 14 September 938, Mainz Oder, Ingelheim, Rhineland, Germany; Hedwige (Hartwige) Princess of the Germans: Born about 910, of Saxony, Germany; Died 14 March 965, Aix-La-Chapelle. Robert I's son, Hugh the Great, was never King, but he ruled as Duke over a large area of Ile-de-France and the Loire valley.
