4. Lothaire II, King of Lorraine: Born about 830, Alsace, Lorraine, France; Died 7 August 869, Plaisance, Italy;; Married 15 October 862; Valdrade (Valtrude), Queen of Lorraine: Born about 836, of Lorraine, France; Died 868. Lothair was the second son of Frankish Emperor Lothair I. When the latter abdicated in 855 he left his namesake the northern part of the Frankish Middle Kingdom, which came to be called Lotharingia. Most of Lothair's energy seems to have been spent in the effort to divorce his childless wife, Teutberga, and marry his mistress, Valdrade, so that his son by the latter would be recognized as his heir. This ploy failed because of the opposition of Pope Nicholas I. In 863, Lothair inherited the kingdom of Provence from his brother Charles. After Lothair's death, his kingdom was divided between his uncles Louis the German and the future Emperor Charles II by the Treaty of Mersen (870).
