Boleslav is best remembered for the assasination of his brother, St. Wenceslaus of Good King Wenceslaus fame. Boleslav, like his brother, was a Christian, and his bloody act has never been properly explained. It probably had personal and political rather than religious motives. He was a powerful and ambitious man and did a great deal to consolidate the Czech state, even though a part of eastern Bohemia enjoyed autonomy. Boleslav managed to restore much of the former Moravian empire. He added to Bohemia the later Margravate of Moravia (largely within its eventual borders), most of what is now Slovakia, much of Silesia, and the territory around Cracow. Boleslav personally led a large Czech contingent at the great battle of Lechfeld in 995. This battle successfully put an end to the Magyar westward expansion. Boleslav's policy was thus directed toward combining friendly relations with the Holy Roman Emperor, Otto I, even at the cost of mainly formal feudal ties, with a systematic strengthening of his own realm.

According to old tradiditions Borijov reveived baptism at the hands of the blessed Methodius himself. He seems indeed to have built the first churches in the Country. With the rapid weakening of the Moravian state after Svatopluk's two Czech princes, aware of the impossibility to stem the Magyar invasion, promised their allegiance to the Frankish Empire at Reichstag at Regensburg in 895. This western directed policy, as well as further Christianization, was purposefully continued by Borijov's widow Lidmilla after his death.
