3. Louis VI "the Fat", King of France: Born 1081, France; Died 1 August 1137, Bethizy Castle, Paris, Seine, France; Married April 1115, Paris, Seine, France; Alix (Adelaide), Countess of Savoy, Queen of France: Born about 1092, of Savoie, France; Died 18 November 1154. Louis VI succeeded his father, Philip I, as King of France in 1108. As early as 1100, however, he had begun to take over the military leadership of the monarchy from his aging and lethargic father. During this period the French princes were virtually independent, and the King had effective power only in the royal domain consisting essentially of the Ile-de-France. Even this region was infested with unruly Barons who used their castles as bases from which to terrorize the Countryside, plunder churches, and disrupt transportation. In 30 years of almost constant fighting, Louis VI, with strong support from the clergy, forced these Barons to accept his discipline, won the respect of the princes, and laid the foundations for the future growth in monarchical power. Although not an eager supporter of church reform, Louis had good relations with the popes, one of whom was his wife's uncle. He held his own against such dangerous and powerful neighbors as the Duke of Normandy, who was Henry I of England, and the Count of Blois. He also led an army that repelled a German invasion in 1124, although he was less successful when he tried to intervene in Flanders in 1127. In the latter years he reduced the power of the Garlande family, which had sought to dominate the royal administration, and thereafter his main advisors were Raoul, Count of Vermandois, and Suger, abbot of Saint-Denis, who became his biographer. Shortly before Louis's death in 1137, Eleanor of Aquitaine became his ward and married his son and successor, Louis VII.

4. Philip I, King of France: Born before 23 May 1052/1053, Reims, Marne, France; Died 29 July 1108, Melun, Seine-et-Marne, France; Married 1071/1072, France; Bertha Countess of Holland, Queen of France: Born about 1054, of Vlaardingen, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands; Died 1093/1094, Montreuil-sur-Lo, Maine-et-Loire, France. Philip I was King of France from 1060 to 1108. He was 8 years old when he succeeded his father, Henry I. For 7 years he was under the guardianship of Baldwin V, Count of Flanders, and was unable to interfere with the Norman conquest of England in 1066. Philip ruled only a very small part of France, and even there some of the castellans defied and embarrassed him. He was in constant trouble with the church because of a bigamous marriage, resistance to church reform, and slothful, sensual behavior. After 1100 his son Louis VI gradually took over the government.
